Art in the Park 2012

Come view (and buy!) photography by Lawrence Photo Alliance members at our booth at the 51st Annual Art in the Park, Sunday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Art in the Park takes place on the east side of South Park, 12th and Massachusetts Street adjacent to downtown Lawrence. The event features over 150 local, regional and national artists. Fine art and fine crafts abound in a lively atmosphere of music, vendors, children’s activities. There is no admission charge.

The Lawrence Photo Alliance booth at Art in the Park is about half-way between the gazebo and the southwest corner of the park. (Southwest is away from downtown, toward Massachusetts street.)

May 2012 Meeting

Join us at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1 in the basement lobby of the Lawrence Arts Center for the French Connection Project Reveal at our May meeting!

The slideshow from our new friends from Club Photograff in Illkirch, France has arrived and Carole and Marciana have finished putting together the Lawrence Photo Alliance slideshow. Now it is time for the fun part of the project! If possible, please bring a snack or beverage to the meeting to share. We think it would be fun to enjoy French food and beverages while we watch the slideshows. Some examples of French foods and beverages are quiche, tapenade, pain au chocolat, baguettes, champagne, cafe au lait, and Perrier. Of course, there are also several well known food items with French in the name such as French Fries, French Bread, French Dressing, French Toast, etc. The idea is to have a fun and creative evening! Please plan to attend the meeting on May 1 as it will be a unique international celebration of friendship and photography.

This will also be a good time to volunteer to help staff the Lawrence Photo Alliance booth at Art in the Park on Sunday, May 6.

Join us at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 in the basement lobby of the Lawrence Arts Center.

Luke Jordan and Kate Meyer from the Spencer Art Museum at KU will present the program. They will talk about the process of selecting photographs for museum purchase, including a discussion about the Spencer’s newest acquisition. They will also tell us about the “Walk-Ins Welcome Fridays” when the Spencer opens the print room for requests.

As usual, we will also have a member show-and-tell time after the presentation. Bring some of your latest work to show!

The presentation: Roll Camera and Turn Up the Volume

Journal-World chief photographer Mike Yoder will speak about the transformation in newspaper photojournalism from that of the still-image document to multi-media storytelling. Yoder will discuss the challenges, tools and techniques of gathering multiple stills, video and audio for expanded online content.

Our monthly meeting will be on the second Tuesday in January.

Roger Ewing will discuss photo sharing on Smug Mug and Carole Shante wants to talk about ways to make a connection with her photo club in France. We will also be looking for ideas for meeting topics or speakers for 2012.

December 2011 Meeting – Holiday Dinner and Print Exchange

Tuesday, December 6, 6:00pm in the basement lobby of the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire.

Members: We will hold Elections for officers for the coming year.

We will then celebrate the season with our holiday dinner and print exchange. The group will provide the main course (ham and turkey), drinks and utensils (plates, cups and silverware.) Please bring a side dish or dessert, yourself of course, and a spouse or friend if you’d like. If you want to participate in the print exchange, please bring a gift-wrapped matted print of your own work.

Not a member? Come join the alliance! December is time for our annual renewal… dues are are $20/person or $30/family (2 people or more.)

LPA on Lawrence ArtWalk 2011

The Photo Alliance is participating in the Lawrence ArtWalk, a two-day self-guided tour of Lawrence artists’ studios and other art spaces. Lawrence ArtWalk hours are 10am-6pm Saturday, Oct 29, and Noon-6pm Sunday, Oct 30.

Stop by the Lawrence Arts Center and see the Lawrence Photo Alliance’s work. In addition, several of the Lawrence Photo Alliance photographers will have their own individual stops on the ArtWalk. Maps available at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire. Roger Spohn will be showing his work at the Watkins Community Museum, 11th and Massachusetts, and Brad Levy will be showing his work at 2800 Pebble Lane, about a block south of Holcom Park.
